Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, not only the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
