Resurgent Daniil Medvedev Secures First Championship in Nearly 30 Months

19 of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one championships have been won on hard surfaces

A comeback Medvedev secured his maiden title for over two years with success over opponent Moutet in the Almaty Open final.

Medvedev, a ex- world number one, has had a difficult period, managing just a single victory at the major tournaments and undergoing a meltdown at the New York tournament.

The player's varied form on the tennis tour - and struggles with his serving in especial - resulted in him dropping out of the elite rankings and finally splitting with long-term trainer his previous coach.

Now working with Johansson and his other coach, the tennis star has steadily progressed in the past month - peaking in a hard-fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 win over opponent Corentin Moutet.

It is Medvedev's maiden title since the 2023 Rome Masters and first on a hard surface from that period of that year.

Success also means he has secured 21 titles at 21 different tournaments.

"For the first time I'm at a tournament with my two daughters at once, so to secure a trophy is particularly special," stated tennis professional Medvedev.

"This victory is in honour of my second daughter her name, because the first title I achieved when my child Alisa was delivered was for her."

The athlete, the former major winner, had failed in his past six finals, including in that event earlier this year.

The player's retrieving play style and recurring emotional displays on the playing surface had led some to question if his ability to perform at the highest level was finished.

But the 29-year-old has made changes in recent weeks, striving to advance forward and play positively, reinforced by an improved service.

Medvedev fought back from a deficit in the first set against the tricky opponent, securing four of the last five points to take the lead.

The pair exchanged break points in the second set before the Frenchman, striving for his maiden ATP Tour championship, gained dominance to push for a final set.

The opponent defended four early-game opportunities in a close deciding set before the champion secured a break to fifteen to serve for the match.

Suitably, he clinched victory with a point at the net area, with his opponent failing to handle a shot after over two and a half hours.
