Conservative reactions to the limited release of documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this open with the public about such a sensitive legal matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo outlining the redaction procedure.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While the former president's identity and image appear in some of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt significant questions about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of Republicans immediately called for greater transparency.
“People are furious and walking away,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the law, and implied that a future legislature may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s document release grossly does not adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Release
However, some conservative pundits and Trump allies swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are entirely censored, and numerous of the individuals depicted in photographs have their identities blacked out.
But a few do not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, enabled certain rightwing voices to go on the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the political left wrongly claimed President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no criminal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been concealing those files for months only to dump them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and conceal forever. So they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement concluded.
Broader Conservative Commentary Remains Subdued
However, broader discourse on the right was comparatively subdued after the release, especially when juxtaposed against the loud calls for action that preceded the congressional vote to pass a bill requiring the files' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest proponents for a full release. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative personalities were provided hard-copy folders of files that contained no previously unseen information.
