The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
